I had the pleasure of leading a 5-week textile project for GemArts’ South Asian Women’s Group. This experience was not only a celebration of creativity but also a testament to the power of community and cultural heritage.
Throughout these five weeks, we explored the rich traditions of textile art, focusing on techniques such as tie-dyeing, embroidery, and sewing. The ladies poured their hearts into every creation, producing beautiful textile pieces.
One of the highlights of this project was seeing these creations exhibited at the GemArts Masala Festival. The festival, a colourful celebration of South Asian arts and culture, where we were able to showcase the group’s work. Our display featured a variety of handcrafted products, including vibrant cushions that were dyed and embroidered.
Beyond the artistry, what made this project truly special was the sense of community that developed within the group. The Feel Good Ladies Group lived up to its name—every session was filled with laughter, learning, and mutual support. The warm and welcoming nature of the participants made this experience incredibly enriching. We shared more than just skills and techniques; we shared stories, experiences, and plenty of traditional South Asian food, which added a delightful flavour to our workshops.
Thank you to GemArts and the Feel Good Ladies Group for allowing me to be part of something so special.
